What Are The Different Types Of Facial Lines?

From frown lines to Crow’s feet, here are the different types of facial lines that can appear as you age

Have you started noticing lines and folds on your face? It is a sign of ageing. Fortunately, there are a few treatments that can prevent and reduce the appearance of these lines. But, to find what works best for you, it is important to understand different types of facial lines and their causes.

What are the different types of facial lines?

There are different types of facial lines caused by different factors.

Frown lines
Frown lines, also known as the glabellar lines, appear between your brows. These vertical lines are categorised as dynamic wrinkles as they are caused by repeated muscle contraction. As you age, due to loss of skin elasticity, your skin doesn’t easily return to its original shape. This leads to the formation of these facial lines. You can also develop frown lines due to factors like your face shape, skin tightness, genetics, and how often you make certain expressions.

  • Worry linesWorry lines, also known as glabellar lines, are horizontal forehead creases. These facial lines are also categorised as dynamic wrinkles because they are caused due to repeated muscle activity. These lines are found above the eyebrows on the forehead. The lines that appear in your glabella may deepen and remain permanently as a result of a combination of factors, including genetics, skin tightness, muscle activity, face shape, and various intrinsic and extrinsic causes. If left untreated, these lines can evolve into wavy furrows in the forehead.
  • Crow’s feetHave you noticed lines spreading out from the corners of your eyes? These facial lines are known as Crow’s feet. Crow’s feet develop over time as a result of small muscle contractions that occur whenever you make a facial expression. Therefore, facial expressions like squinting, smiling, and frowning can lead to the formation of Crow’s feet over time. Since the skin around your eyes is very delicate, it is more susceptible to forming wrinkles. Therefore, to prevent Crow’s feet, avoid rubbing your eyes or pulling on the skin around your eyes while applying make-up.
  • Marionette lines

Marionette lines run vertically between the mouth and chin and can cause sagging in the lower half of your face. Because of their drooping quality, marionette lines can make your face look perpetually pouty. These lines develop on the lower half of your face due to collagen and elastin loss. Gravity can also be responsible for making your skin saggy; it makes the marionette lines more prominent. Lack of hydration, long-term sun exposure, genetics, stress, and poor nutrition are some other factors that can lead to marionette lines. These lines tend to become clearly visible around your 40s. But, in some cases, people start seeing them in their 30s and even late 20s.
  • Laugh lines

Laugh lines, also known as nasolabial folds, are the indentation lines on either side of the mouth that stretch from the edge of the nose to the mouth’s outer corners. These facial lines become more prominent when you smile, and they tend to deepen with age. Sun exposure, loss of collagen, and fat loss are some common factors that can lead to the formation of laugh lines. Nasolabial folds are categorised as static wrinkles.

  • Lip lines

Lip lines, also known as smoker’s lines,  are the vertical lines that form along the upper lip. Lip lines develop on both the lips and the skin of the upper lip. They occur on the lips as a series of thin vertical lines that typically reach from one side of the mouth to the other. Above the lip, vertical lines extend upward from the lip toward the nose. These facial lines are particularly difficult to treat or conceal.
